Costa Rica 2017 Program Costs

Penn State Undergraduate Student

(Courses must be scheduled sequentially and as a unit)

Biology 296 or Biology 496; late spring, 2017; 3 credits

Cost: Students who are enrolled for 12 or more credits in the spring semester can add this online course for no additional tuition cost.

Biology 296 or Biology 496; May 19-28, 2017; 1 credit

Cost: $1,500 (field practicum) plus one credit tuition of $542 for BIOL 296 or $584 for BIOL 496 (in state) and $859 for BIOL 296 or $899 for BIOL 496 (out of state); plus mandatory fee of $63 for information technology and activity fees.

Penn State Graduate Student

(Courses must be scheduled sequentially and as a unit)

Biology 496; late spring, 2017; 3 credits

Cost: Students who are enrolled for 12 or more credits in the spring semester can add this online course for no additional tuition cost.

Biology 496; May 19-28, 2017; 1 credit

Cost: $2,000 (practicum) plus one-credit tuition of $868 (in state) and $1,107 (out of state); plus mandatory fee of $63 for information technology and activity fees.

In-service Teachers

Cost: $2,000(online pre-trip assignments and field practicum; professional development activities). Tuition credits (graduate or CEUs) are extra.

Teachers can gain either graduate credits or CEU hours. All teacher participants must be registered for either one or the other. Please apply!

Graduate credits: Tuition based on number of graduate credits desired, 4 max @ $483/graduate credit [3 credits for Biology 496 (spring) and 1 credit for Biology 496 (summer)].

Deposit Information

Penn State student participants must be enrolled as full-time students. The application process officially begins on January 18, 2017. Deadline for student registration is March 15, 2017. A $500 deposit is required upon acceptance into this course. Balance due by May 1, 2017. The $500 deposit is non-refundable. Space is limited and will be assigned on an academic selection basis (GPA, reflective essay, and letter of recommendation).

What is Included in the Program Cost

What is Included in the Field Trip (practicum) Cost

All instruction and guide services; all meals and lodging as stated in the itinerary; all ground, water and air transportation within Costa Rica; all entrance fees to National Parks and other sites; research and conservation activities; round-trip international airfare.

What is Not Included in the Field Trip (practicum) Cost

Passport fees; Penn State mandatory HTH Worldwide Study Abroad insurance (~ $2.00/day); gratuities to guides, drivers, or transfer personnel; transportation to-and-from Newark International Airport, New Jersey; luggage fees; laundry; telephone calls; and any other expenses of a personal nature.
