Day 1 - Havana

Flight to Havana. Upon arrival and clearing immigration, transfer to the hotel for check-in. This afternoon, receive a talk from diplomat and scholar, Carlos Alzugaray, on the history of the US Cuba relations. This talk provides an overview of the longer historical context, as well as covering aspects of Cuba’s transition today. In the evening enjoy a welcome dinner.

Day 2 - Havana

In the morning, take a walking tour of Old Havana, focusing on its history. Following, we will head to the Center for Marine Research (University of Havana) to meet with experts from the Cuban Society for the Protection of the Environment - Pronaturaleza for an overview of Marine protection policy and conservation. Enjoy lunch at Rio Mar, before we return to Old Havana for an afternoon visit to the Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of the Revolution. This evening, dine at a paladar. Day 3 - Viñales

Travel to Soroa. En route, visit Sierra del Rosario, 61,000 acres of evergreen forest and home of Las Terrazas, a self-sustained community named after the reforestation project initiated in 1967. Also visit the Soroa Waterfall & Orchidarium. Continue on to Viñales for dinner and overnight. Overnight at Hotel Los Jazmines. (BLD)

Day 4 – Viñales

This morning we will take a short drive to Viñales National Park. Here we will hike guided by local expert. We will visit Cueva de los Portales, a limestone cave set adjacent to hills covered in lush vegetation. The cave is interesting both geologically and historically, famous for being where Ernesto “Che” Guevara headquartered during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. Following this, we will visit a tobacco farm and learn how Cuban farmers collaborate with the government in order to get farming supplies and transport produce to market. In afternoon enjoy a reception and welcome to a local Cuban home, visit the studio of wildlife artist Nils Navarro, author of “Endemic Birds of Cuba; A Comprehensive Field Guide” (2015). Day 5 – Guanahacabibes

Depart for María La Gorda in the Guanahacabibes Peninsula, a Biosphere Reserve in the Pinar del Rio province. Upon arrival, we will enjoy an introductory talk on Guanahacabibes National Park (PNG):  Conservation and Management of PNG’s natural, historical and social resources). After lunch, we will experience the park’s impressive coral reefs via a guided snorkel excursion by PNG Marine Biologist (snorkel equipment is not included). Experts consider that the seabed at María la Gorda is a critical marine system because of the water clarity and the abundant marine life such as shark, sting rays, barracuda, groupers, lobsters, eels, angel fish, crabs and more. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight at Hotel Maria La Gorda. (BLD)

Day 6 – Guanahacabibes

Today we begin with a morning talk: Guanahacabibes National Park Research, Monitoring and Management Program. We will explore research, monitoring and management projects directed to coastal ecosystems (coral reefs, mangroves and seagrass) including current results of the marine turtle project. Following our talk, we will visit with the park’s turtle monitoring site to explore park infrastructure and visit with the volunteer team fostering turtle research. Key to the protection of sea turtles in Cuba, we will participate this afternoon in a service project to remove trash that threatens coastal species. This evening, participate in the collection of data during the nesting process including morphometric variables of each individual, marking the nests, and other data. During this activity, there is a direct interaction with the turtle conservation project. Overnight at Hotel Las Tumbas. (BLD)

Day 7 – Guanahacabibes

This morning will focus on the Environmental Education Initiatives Showcasing Results of Local Outreach. Following our talk, we will visit with a local elementary school to explore the park’s projects with local students. Following lunch, we will discuss the PNG Protection Program: Conservation Strategies and Collaboration Agreements with other institutions to achieve conservation and management of natural resources. Spend your final day in exploration of marine environments of the white sand beaches and emerald sea with final snorkeling excursions (snorkel equipment not included). Snorkel in the nursery of Acropora cervicornis (coral restoration project). This evening participate in the collection of data during the nesting process including morphometric variables of each individual, marking the nests, and other data. During this activity, there is a direct interaction with the turtle conservation project.. Overnight at Hotel Maria La Gorda. (BLD)

Day 8 – Havana
Ambos Mundos hotel

This morning return to Havana. Lunch on own and time to explore Old Havana. This evening, enjoy dinner at the hotel and then attend the innovative musical show Opera de la Calle. Overnight at Hotel Ambos Mundos. (BD)

Day 9 – Havana

This morning you will be transferred to the Havana airport for your flight back to the U.S. (B)
