Academic Requirements

BIOL 496 or SUST 495 - Environmental Protection, Conservation, and the Sustainability of Cuban Ecosystems

(3 credits; late spring, 2017; online)

Students must complete:  1) innovative online pre-trip assignments that provide essential background knowledge on topics and areas to be explored.

Penn State undergraduate prerequisite: entrance to major and 5th semester standing.

BIOL 496 or SUST 495 - A Field Practicum in Cuba

(1 credit; summer; July 7-15, 2017)

Students must complete: a field-based trip experience (9 days in duration) that includes: 1) field research on a real-world question related to the environmental sustainability of Cuba; field exploration of select ecosystems; upkeep of a field journal; participation in group discussion forums and reflections; conservation service work on nesting sea turtles; and, 2) a post-trip, online assignments that encourage the integration and application of key concepts learned, and a professional group presentation via a poster on assigned group research question at a public undergraduate research venue (TBA).
