A Nine-Week Undergraduate Research and Education Experience

The Lacawac's Sanctuary Research Internship Program offers undergraduate students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the fields of environmental research and education. Interns will gain experience and training in:

  • Lake ecology and water quality sampling methodology
  • Quantitative laboratory analysis
  • Experimental design and scientific method
  • Laboratory and field safety
  • Science communication
  • Data and project management
  • Leadership and mentoring
Interns receive a modest stipend and free housing in a historic Adirondack-style lodge. The internship is from June 3 through August 2, 2019.

Marine Sciences Summer Program

The Summer REU Program in Marine Science at the University of Delaware, is an NSF-Funded Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. Supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Ocean Sciences, this REU program supports ten undergraduate students to conduct research in chemical, physical, or biological oceanography, marine biology or marine geology. The program will take place at the University of Delaware's Hugh R. Sharp campus in the resort community of Lewes, located on the shores of the Delaware Bay and Atlantic Ocean. In addition to hands-on research experience, student support includes a $6,200 stipend, campus housing, and travel assistance.
Applications are due Friday, February 8th, 2019.

Penn State University Water Faculty Call for Nominations of Student Members of the Water Council

A critical component to Penn State’s success in water research and faculty is the strength and energy of its students. For this reason, the University Water Council seeks nominations of outstanding undergraduate and graduate students engaged in water research and education at Penn State to be members of the Council. The existing Council members will select two students, one from the undergraduate student body and one from the graduate student body.

Eligible students should have a course of study or research that has a water-related emphasis and be nominated by a Water Faculty member. Nominations packages should be submitted by a nominating Water Faculty member and should consist of the following:

  1. A Letter of Nomination from a Water Faculty member describing the student’s strengths and qualifications to be a member of the Water Council, including the student’s interest in water related research and education.
  2. A Statement of Interest of 250 words or less from the student clearly stating his/her interest in serving on the Water Council and the strengths he/she would bring to the position.
  3. A Resume/CV. The Resume/CV should clearly state the current standing and academic pursuit of the student (undergraduate/graduate, semester of study/degree pursued, major/minor/concentration of study).

Nominations should be submitted to Chris Pfeiffer, Institutes of Energy and the Environment, at by Wednesday, January 30, 2019. Selections will be announced in February 2019.

2018 Delaware Watershed Research Conference - Deadline Extended October 31st

The Delaware Watershed Research Conference is a component of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University's initiative to encourage novel research throughout the Delaware River Watershed and to foster collaboration among the growing research community. This gathering will serve as a platform for experts in their respective disciplines to discuss the state of watershed research, particularly within the Delaware River Watershed, toward answering management and conservation questions.

New this year: There will be a poster session during the lunch break and students and professionals are invited to bring a poster showcasing their work within the Delaware Basin. All topics are welcome!

Woods Hole Partnership Education Program

The Woods Hole Partnership Education Program (PEP) is designed primarily for college juniors and seniors who want to spend a summer gaining practical experience in marine and environmental science. The program consists of a four-week course and a six-to-ten week research project – all in the sea-side village of Woods Hole, Massachusetts. PEP was launched in 2009 by a consortium of institutions committed to increasing diversity in the Woods Hole science community. The 2018 program will run June 2 to August 11, 2018.

Students may receive four hours of credit through the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, or with approval, through their own home institution. Housi is provided. Participating students will have their tuition covered and will receive a stipend, room and board, and a travel allowance.

PEP students study, conduct research, and receive training in their areas of interest, working in labs with leading researchers in marine and environmental sciences.

Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research (GIAR) Program

Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to apply for research funding through the Grants-in-Aid of Research (GIAR) program. Applications are now being accepted for the spring 2018 grant cycle in numerous STEM related disciplines.

The program awards grants of up to $1,000 to students from all areas of the sciences and engineering. Designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences allow for grants of up to $5,000 for astronomy research and $2,500 for vision related research. Students use the funding to pay for travel expenses to and from a research site, or for purchase of non-standard laboratory equipment necessary to complete a specific research project.

The deadline to submit applications is March 15, 2018 at 11:59 pm Pacific Time.

Apply for the AIBS Emerging Public Policy Leadership Award

Each year, the American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) recognizes graduate students in the biological sciences who have demonstrated initiative and leadership in science policy. Recipients obtain first-hand experience at the interface of science and public policy. Winners receive:

  • A trip to Washington, DC, to participate in the AIBS Congressional Visits Day, an annual event that brings scientists to the nation's capital to advocate for federal investment in the biological sciences, with a primary focus on the National Science Foundation. The event will be held on April 16-18, 2018. Domestic travel and hotel expenses will be paid for the winners.
  • Policy and communications training, including information on how to communicate science to policymakers, the legislative process, and trends in federal science funding.
  • Meetings with congressional policymakers to discuss the importance of federal investment in the biological sciences.
  • A one-year AIBS membership, including a subscription to the journal BioScience and a copy of "Communicating Science: A Primer for Working with the Media."

The 2018 award is open to U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents enrolled in a graduate degree program in the biological sciences, science education, or a closely allied field.

The deadline to apply is January 17, 2018.

The Penn State Student Engagement Network (SEN) is hosting the Student Engagement EXPO on Monday, November 6 in the HUB-Robeson Center at University Park.

Proposals are sought for presentations, posters and photos that will inform or advance the practice of student engagement through research findings; innovative programs; student club activities; innovative programs or partnership models; proven community impact; effective curriculum or service-learning models; professional, travel or volunteer experiences; or successful civic engagement practices.

The SEN invites undergraduate students to speak (FIVE minutes) about how engagement has impacted their lives and academic careers in the form of lightning round presentations.

What is Young Champions of the Earth?

Six Young Champions of the Earth are selected every year, one from each global region (Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, North America, and West Asia). Each winner receives the following:

  • US$15,000 in seed funding;
  • Attendance at the United Nations Environment Assembly in Nairobi, December 2017, and the United Nations General Assembly in New York, September 2018 (all expenses paid);
  • An introduction to over 100 environment ministers at the Champions of the Earth Gala Dinner;
  • Publicity and recognition through online and global media;
  • Access to high-profile mentors and customized training in communications, project planning, financial management, etc.

Apply for the UN Foundation's Global Health Fellowship

The fellowship program is a unique and exciting opportunity for students to learn directly from policy experts and experienced grassroots organizers on the intricacies of the UN’s vital work in global health and the key role played by U.S. leadership.

Furthermore, the fellowship focuses on connecting students to the UN Foundation’s campaigns and initiatives – including the Shot@Life and Nothing But Nets campaigns – empowering them to take action and make a direct impact on global health policy.

This seven-week online program will teach students the advocacy skills necessary to run a grassroots campaign, including:

  • Conducting successful in-district meetings;
  • Using social media to engage elected officials;
  • Fundraising;
  • Recruiting volunteers; and
  • Engaging local media outlets.

Ultimately, UNF’s Global Health Fellowship will challenge students to turn their passion into action and make their voices heard to promote healthy lives for millions of men, women, and children.

Fellows will be asked to apply these lessons to real-life situations, working with UNF staff to influence change in their communities and develop career-ready skills. US Forest Service & NAAEE 2017 Young Professionals Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship

The North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) is seeking to support 6 young professionals from racially or ethnically diverse backgrounds to attend the NAAEE’s 46th Annual Conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico, October 18th – 21st, 2017.

NAAEE and the U.S. Forest Service share a goal of increasing diversity within the field of environmental education (EE). Through a participating agreement with the U.S. Forest Service, NAAEE will support scholarships for six young professionals who are seeking to initiate or progress their careers within the field through participation in professional development workshops, trainings, and networking opportunities with EE professionals from diverse cultures and communities.

NAAEE is dedicated to achieving greater diversity and inclusion within its own organization and to promoting principles that help build a more diverse and inclusive environmental movement, with a focus on promoting ecological integrity, economic prosperity, and social equity for all. Through the conference, NAAEE hopes to provide resources and opportunities for young professionals seeking to launch their careers in the field of EE or to become more established educators.

Six scholarship recipients will receive support to cover:

  • The conference registration fee
  • Round-trip airfare and/or ground transportation
  • Three nights of lodging, beginning Wednesday, October 18th, with a check out date of Saturday, October 21st.  All recipients will have their own rooms. Attendees will be responsible for supplying a credit or debit card for incidentals upon check-in.
  • Meals and ground transportation. These costs will be reimbursed after the event, upon proof of purchase (an invoice or receipt). Some of these costs will need to be covered out-of-pocket by the individuals if they exceed the total scholarship amount, though the conference registration fee does include two evening receptions and two lunches. All events associated with the conference are within walking distance, however special accommodations may be provided upon request.

Scholarship attendees will be required to attend all plenary/keynote sessions, a number of specific U.S. Forest Service sessions, which will be shared prior to the event, and the awards luncheon on Saturday.

Smith Fellows 2018 Call for Proposals Announced

The Society for Conservation Biology is pleased to solicit applications for the David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellowship Program. These two year postdoctoral fellowships provide support for outstanding early-career scientists of any nationality who want to better link conservation science and theory with policy and management, improving and expanding their research skills while directing their efforts towards conservation problems of pressing concern for the United States.

Fellows will spend up to three weeks per year during their fellowship attending Program-sponsored professional development retreats. These retreats provide opportunities to cultivate skills typically not covered during their academic education including: leadership, communications, professional and funder networks, and to gain better understanding of policy making and application of research.

Fellows are selected on the basis of innovation, potential for leadership and strength of proposal. The deadline for receipt of application materials is 8 September 2017. The Program expects to select five Fellows in January 2018 for appointments to start between March and September 2018. Fellowship awards include an annual salary of $55,000, benefits, and generous travel and research budgets.

Advanced Primatology Scholarship

This is a scholarship opportunity in conjunction with the Alliance for a Sustainable Amazon (ASA) that will support project proposals to investigate the demography, spatial ecology, and/or feeding ecology of brown titi monkeys (Callicebus brunneus). The exact nature of the proposed research project is open, but should be in line with the ASA’s mission of promoting conservation. Please note that at this stage the trapping or handling of vertebrate species at our field site is not authorized; proposals, therefore, should be for observational research only.

The successful applicant will have the support of the ASA’s academic faculty and staff, resident naturalists, and a number of volunteers and internship program participants that may serve as field assistants. The scholarship will cover food and lodging for a period of up to four months (15 May – 15 September, 2017) at Finca Las Piedras, the ASA’s field site in the southeastern Peruvian Amazon. The scholarship does not cover the cost of travel to Puerto Maldonado, or the cost of medical/travel insurance.

The Pennsylvania Outdoor Corps offers young people the opportunity to serve on a team completing conservation projects to protect, enhance and restore Pennsylvania’s public lands. Join a crew of 10 members and two leaders working on trail maintenance, habitat restoration, vegetation management, park maintenance, light construction and more. Environmental education and job skills trainings are also provided. Please note the work is physically demanding and takes place in an outdoor setting in all weather and seasons.

Society for Conservation Biology (LACA Section) 2016 Professional Development Scholarship Opportunity for Graduate Students

The Latin American and Caribbean Section (LACA) of the Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) is pleased to announce a new professional development scholarship opportunity for 2016 that is available to graduate students working in the Latin American and Caribbean region.

LACA will offer four (4) competitive scholarships of $2,000 USD each in support of expenses associated with emerging conservation professionals conducting their thesis work in disciplines and subjects directly related to applied conservation biology, and for which some tangible conservation benefit or outcome is anticipated.

Apply for the 2017 Emerging Public Policy Leadership Award

Are you a science graduate student looking to make a difference in science policy and funding? Applications are being accepted for the 2017 AIBS Emerging Public Policy Leadership Award. This award recognizes graduate students in the biological sciences who have demonstrated initiative and leadership in science policy. Recipients receive first-hand experience at the interface of science and public policy.

Winners receive:

  • A trip to Washington, DC, to participate in the Biological and Ecological Sciences Coalition Congressional Visits Day, an annual event that brings scientists to the nation's capital to advocate for federal investment in the biological sciences, with a primary focus on the National Science Foundation. The event will be held in spring 2017. Domestic travel and hotel expenses will be paid for the winners.
  • Policy and communications training, including information on the legislative process and trends in federal science funding.
  • Meetings with congressional policymakers to discuss the importance of federal investments in the biological sciences.
  • A one-year AIBS membership, including a subscription to the journal BioScience and a copy of "Communicating Science: A Primer for Working with the Media."

The 2017 award is open to U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents enrolled in a graduate degree program in the biological sciences, science education, or a closely allied field. Applications are due by 11:59 PM Eastern Time on 9 January 2017.

Young people are the next generation of climate justice leaders - and the federal government is honored to offer opportunities for students to expand their knowledge about the environment and to hone their leadership skills. If you are studying climate change, you may be interested in the "Educate, Motivate, Innovate" workshop, which will be hosted at the 2nd annual National Environmental Justice Conference and Training Program from March 8-10, 2017, in Washington, D.C. Abstracts are due November 14, 2016.

The workshop will provide a forum for selected students to share their work addressing the impacts of climate change on communities with environmental justice concerns.

Campus RainWorks Challenge: Register Now

EPA is calling for entries in the annual Campus Rainworks Challenge, a green infrastructure design competition for undergraduate and graduate students. Using their campuses as labs, teams develop green infrastructure systems to reduce stormwater pollution and build resilience to climate change. The first place team in each design category will receive a student prize of $2,000 to be divided evenly among the team and a faculty prize of $3,000.

Request for Proposals

The Society for Conservation Biology is pleased to solicit applications for the David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellowship Program. These two year postdoctoral fellowships provide support for outstanding early-career scientists from around the globe to improve and expand their research skills while directing their efforts towards conservation problems of pressing concern for the United States.

Individuals who want to better link conservation science and theory with policy and management are encouraged to apply. We envision that the cadre of scientists supported by the Smith Fellows Program will eventually assume leadership positions across the field of conservation science. Fellows are selected on the basis of innovation, potential for leadership and strength of proposal.

Graduate Student Sought to Perform Research on the Future of the Maya Forest

Position available for a PhD student to assist Dr. Micha Rahder with a collaborative multi-sited ethnographic research project, "Maya Forest Futures: Violence, Uncertainty, and Transnational Biodiversity Conservation in Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala." The student will be provided a stipend for three years at $18,000/year to pursue a PhD in Geography & Anthropology at Louisiana State University, and to assist with the project, beginning in fall 2016. The student will be expected to develop their own research agenda within the PhD program, but those with an interest aligned with Dr. Rahder's project (either geographically or thematically) will be given preference. Experience with ethnographic research strongly preferred, Spanish language skills required.

Scientists and science educators of all stripes — students, postdocs, faculty, and full- or part-time science communicators — are invited to enter the Sixth Annual Evolution Video Competition, sponsored by the Duke Initiative for Science & Society, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), the Society for the Study of Evolution (SSE) and the BEACON Center for the Study! of Evolution in Action. To enter, please submit a video that explains a fun fact, key concept, compelling question, or exciting area of evolution research in THREE MINUTES OR LESS. Entries may be related or unrelated to your own research, and should be suitable for use in a classroom (K-12, undergraduate, graduate…your choice). Videos should be both informative and entertaining. Animations, music videos, and mini documentaries are all fair game.The finalists will be screened at the 2016 Evolution meeting in Austin, TX. First- and second-place winners will receive up to $1,000 and $500, respectively.

The Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship seeks to attract talented, committed individuals with backgrounds in the STEM fields—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—into teaching in high-need secondary schools in Georgia, Indiana, and New Jersey. The American Fisheries Society (AFS) is now accepting applications for its high school internship program in fisheries science, the Hutton Junior Fisheries Biology Program. The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. The applications for the 2014-2015 David L. Boren Scholarships and Fellowships are now available. Boren Awards provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study in Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East, where they can add important international and language components to their educations. Boren Scholars and Fellows represent a variety of academic backgrounds, but all are interested in studying less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili. As part of the African Languages Initiative, Boren Award applicants have the opportunity to further their study of Akan/Twi, French, Hausa, Portuguese, Swahili, Wolof, Yoruba, or Zulu. For a complete list of languages. The Boren Awards are initiatives of the National Security Education Program (NSEP) and are administered by the Institute of International Education.

Undergraduate students can receive up to $20,000 for an academic year’s study abroad and graduate students up to $30,000 for language study and international research. In exchange for funding, recipients commit to working in the federal government for a minimum of one year.

Eric Lander Offers Free Intro Bio Course on edX

Eric Lander, one of the leaders of the Human Genome Project, is hosting an introductory biology course on edX, the not-for-profit online learning initiative founded by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). 7.00x – The Secret of Life will let you explore the mysteries of biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, recombinant DNA technology and genomics, and rational medicine.

Although this course has been designed exclusively for edX, the course content reflects the topics Lander has taught in the MIT introductory biology courses for many years. Students will complete this course in 12 weeks. At the center of each week is a series of lecture sequences that are supported by interactive video tutorials and interspersed exercises or problems. Additionally, students will work on a homework assignment or exam each week. The course will conclude with a comprehensive final exam.

The course is not just for the traditional students, but also educators and scientists who work in the biomedical/health care professions who need a refresher on the most cutting edge biology and genetics. The only prerequisite is a desire to learn.
