Academic Requirements

Biology 2961 or 4962- Conservation and Sustainability of the Tropical Rainforest

(3 credits; late spring, 2017; online)

Students must complete (pre-trip): innovative online pre-trip assignments that provide essential background knowledge on topics and areas to be explored.

  • 1 Penn State undergraduate prerequisite: students must have a >3.0 cumulative GPA and 2nd – 4th semester standing.
  • 2 Penn State undergraduate prerequisite: entrance to major and 5th semester standing

Biology 2961 or 4962 - A Field Practicum in Costa Rica

(1 credit; summer; May 19-28, 2017)

Students must complete: a field-based trip experience (ten days in duration in conjunction with the OTS, La Selva in Costa Rica) that includes: 1) hands-on field research on a real-world question related to the ecology or biodiversity of the rainforest; field exploration of select rainforest ecosystems; upkeep of a scientific journal and notebook; participation in group discussion forums, data analyses and interpretations; a professional group presentation on assigned research project; and, conservation service work; and, 2) post-trip online assignments that encourage the integration and application of key concepts learned.
